Thankfully the availability of professional moving companies has made the process of moving extremely hustle free, and safe. This is why moving into a new house nowadays is not seen as overwhelming as it once was. However, there are some basic etiquettes you can follow to assist these professionals on a moving day.
Considering these etiquettes can also make sure you are not missing out on anything and reduce all the potential damages that can happen during the moving process because of improper packaging or arrangements from your end.
Have Everything Packed
Packing everything and keeping them ready beforehand, and not putting them off until the last minute, lets the movers get to work as soon as they arrive. Remember that they may have to attend to many other customers on the same day, and they could give you an allocated time slot to provide their service.
It respects their time and lets you pack everything in advance without missing out on things that are easy to overlook like artwork or decorative pieces, goods on storage units and other knick-knacks.
Pack Neatly And Label Clearly
Although professional movers are well-trained and experienced to load and unload goods, if you’re taking the packaging responsibility, then damages because of improper packaging can be your fault. Make sure to pack goods according to their nature, and label them accurately.
Especially when it comes to fragile goods like glassware or artwork, packaging and labelling them properly is crucial to let movers know how to handle them with due care. Make sure you are packaging everything in easy-to-carry containers or boxes and at all costs avoid presenting goods in garbage bags.
To make things even easier for both movers and yourself, you can also label where each box or container should be moved in terms of rooms or spaces in your new house. When boxes are moved to the right room, it’s easier for you to unpack and arrange them quickly, than spending time segregating them.
Keep Prohibited Items Separately
It’s a common policy among moving companies that they cannot handle certain items or goods. This includes hazardous materials, alcohol, combustible items, plants, and pets, just to name a few. So it is your duty to keep these things out of the way and not mix them with other goods when your movers arrive.
You can get a list of prohibited goods from the company in advance and keep them packed separately and can also label these boxes with “Do not move”, so the movers are aware they are prohibited items. The same applies to goods like medications, personal documents, jewellery and other valuables. Usually, prohibited items are expected to be transported by yourself.
Don’t Hover
Although it can get very tempting to offer a lending hand, it’s actually best to stay out of the way. Professional movers have a systematic or rather strategic way of moving things to keep the process efficient and safe from damage. Interrupting to this even if it might be with good intentions can disrupt their flow.
Keep your kids and pets away from the way and use this time to pack your own car with any items you’ll transport by yourself. While the movers do their work, you can do a final sweep to hand over the house and unplug electronics and appliances and ack food from the fridge. Alongside these, just stay within reach in case the movers have any questions.
Offer Refreshments
We all know that moving is a tedious task, which is a primary reason why most seek professional moving services in the first place. So it’s always a kind gesture to offer refreshments to movers or at least offer to get them some.
You can just hand over cold water bottles or canned sodas in the summer, or hot coffee or cocoa in cold weather. And if you have a very long move, then it’s likely that your movers can get hungry. In that case, consider buying them some quick meals like pizza or some fruits and snacks.
